Modesty Came First

As soon as Adam and Eve realized their sin, they were ashamed. Why? Not only because of their sin, but their lack of clothing! One of the most important, most worthwhile concepts began not too long after the creation of the world. And it makes sense!

Adam and Eve desperately tried to cover themselves up with clothing they made, but they quickly realize it was only by God’s grace they could remain pure in this world of sin. The same thing goes for today! Everything we try to do without God will fail somehow in the end. But anything odne by God will glorify Him in the end! It is only by His grace that we can be pure. We may slip and fall, but if we confess our sins He is faithful and righteous to answer. By His grace our purity can be renewed, even for those who have given away what they believe is unforgivable.

Eve covered herself because the was feminine. She was made a woman, and she knew that it was a sin not to dress modesty, let alone not to dress at all! She was made differently from males.  Yes, while similar and made in the likeness of God, she was still different and she new she needed to dress that way.

Obviously, this message is not exactly a message one would hear in today’s media. But by God’s grace, it still has been preserved by true Christians throughout the ages! The world, the Beast we have been talking about, tells us that we don’t need to preserve the sacred- the abstract or the concrete. The Beast tells us that it is all right to “express ourselves”, to “use our freedom”.  The Beast says, “Dress for your comfort and your  fun. It is beautiful to dress immodestly!” Ha! What lies! My sisters, do not listen to this Beast. Immodesty in any form is a sin. It has been spoken of in God’s Word many times and it is the only Voice we need to be listening to.

1 Timothy 2:9
Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire.

1 Peter 3:4
Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

So all of this to point out that:

  • Modesty is of great worth and importance in the sight of God.
  • The Beast lies to us in this area.
  • Beauty comes not only from modest and feminine apparel, but a gentle and quiet heart (more on that in future posts!)

Oh dear, there is so much I want to say. Perhaps for a part 2? We’ll see!

Love,

Bethany from the Bakery
